How Montella’s uncertain future is affecting AC Milan January transfer strategies

Vincenzo Montella is on the brink and AC Milan could decide to sack him on Sunday if the rossoneri won’t avoid defeat against Inter in the derby of Milan.

The diavoli have already lost three of their opening seven Serie A games and the club’s executives are desperate to seal a Champions League qualification at the end of the season as that would allow them to keep all their top players next summer.

There is a clause on Montella’s contract that allows AC Milan to rescind the manager’s deal if he fails to qualify for Europe’s elite competition. A decision over his future, however, could be taken earlier than in the summer.

Our reporter in Milan Daniele Longo points out that the uncertain future of Montella is affecting the rossoneri January transfer strategy.

The Italian tactician, in fact, has adopted the 3-5-2 system as AC Milan’s main formation but a possible managerial swap would also lead to some tactical changes and different choices in the winter transfer window.

That’s why AC Milan can’t play man new signings at the moment as they need to know if Montella will stay in charge of the club.

A new centre midfielder is the only player that AC Milan will surely sign regardless who their next manager will be. The likes of Seko Fofana, Jakub Jankto and Alfred Duncan are the names on the rossoneri agenda at the moment.
