Riccardo Montolivo hasn’t played for Italy since before the Azzurri’s forgettable World Cup campaign. The former Fiorentina skipper went on to fracture his tibia after his last cap, earned on the 31st of May 2014.

Far from out of the woods when he returned to the field last season, Montolivo slipped in and out of the infirmary for nearly 18 months before rejoining the Azzurri last week in their game against Azerbaijan.

Tonight, the 30–year-old could even start for the national side, prompting him to personally thank its manager, Antonio Conte.

“I’m happy and emotional,” Montolivo told Premiumsport.

“I thank Coach Conte for the sensitivity he has shown me”.

Montolivo has tallied 59 caps for his country, scoring twice. His most famous moment, arguably, saw him score against Spain in a friendly in Bari in an August 2011 friendly, sweetly chipping Iker Casillas to put Italy in the lead. The Azzurri went on to win 2-1.
