Ex-Serie A legend gets jail time for Mafia links, role in extortion case

Former Palermo star Fabrizio Miccoli has been sentenced to three years and six months for aggravated extortion, and for being linked to the Sicilian Mafia.

Miccoli, known as the Romario of Salento, was found guilty of approaching Mauro Lauricella, the son of a mob boss, in order to recoup a debt of €12.000 owed to a friend of his.

A former flop at Juventus and capped ten times by Italy, Miccoli was considered a Serie A cult hero, someone who was both talented and prolific with the Rosanero, scoring 74 league goals with them in a six-year period.

The prosecutor had originally asked for four years. Miccoli was even caught in a police wiretap insulting famous Italian magistrate Giovanni Falcone. Falcone is known for having brought over 200 mobsters to justice, but was then killed by Cosa Nostra near Palermo in 1992.

Miccoli hasn’t played football since turning out for Maltese club Birkirkara in 2015.
