Fiorentina: tension, chaos and relegation fears

  • Giacomo Brunetti
Tension in Tuscany as Fiorentina risk relegation to Serie B...Currently La Viola are just two points above Empoli who occupy the last relegation spot in the league. They host Genoa on the final day of the season, needing a victory to guarantee their Serie A safety, while at the same time keeping an eye on events at the Guiseppe Meazza as Turscan rivals Empoli play against Inter.

The fans are no doubt feeling the tension of the occasion. There are many problems affecting the club; six consecutive losses, since the Coppa Italia exist versus Atalanta at the semi-final stage, no wins since the 17th February, and no wins at home in Florence since December. The re-appointment of Vincenzo Montella has not helped.

The tension between the fans and the Delle Valle family who owns the two-time Scudetto winners, have been building for months now, exploding with protests all over the city this month, especially, after letting go of Stefano Pioli as the manager. It seemed unthinkable that Fiorentina could be sent down to Serie B, but mistakes in the market, poor technical choices and the incredible comeback of Empoli, means that all those involved with the club will be living a very tense week ahead of Sunday's "do or die" clash with the Grifone.
